Urban Arts Festival :Story Studio: Telling Stories, Inspiring Lives

May 19, 2016
What a journey.....for the past 9 months...Ive worked with a group of newly arrived immigrant students...helping them to tell and write their stories...and have an opportunity for catharsis And healing...all under the guise of " teaching ESL, art, closing the achievement gap...And differentiating the  New York City Department of Education curriculum...." Of 500 students in the program...4 of mine were selected to perform their stories on the stage of the apollo theater today.....and I don't remember the last time.....if ever..that I personally had to push thru SOOOOO MUCH opposition within a 24hr period of time ... To ensure that this opportunity was met...to ensure that their stories of the first bombs falling in Yemen...a city destroyed And painted red, the journey from el Salvador to new York... immigration police who say they can do whatever they want to 11 year old "illegal" girls crossing the border alone, riding on the tops of trains And walking neck high thru rivers just to be safe in the u.s... could be told and...heard...tonight.... I remember being told..where there is great opposition... Greatness is waiting.... Today was not about me...but Today I maximized the EXTENT of my efforts...today i was used..all of me...totally...perseverance emptied..
To get them to that theatre and to the stage....to not accept any form of no....any barricade of their voice . J. Mendez. F. Isa. D. Isa. S. Al-abdi..I love u...I'm proud of u. U r greatness. May u forever use the power of your tongue to transform the hearts of this world. Including my own.

Electric Eye Ensemble: Welcome to the Doll Den

Khunum Productions, is pleased to be invited to Design for Electric Eye Ensemble in their devised production of "Welcome to the Doll Den" Directed by Sarah Plotkin.

In Tennessee we meet the  first all girl' radio station, WHER. It's 1968 and they play "music for women," broadcasting from their studio, the Doll Den. But with the sanitation workers on strike, protestors in the street, and garbage piling up all around them, the pristine glass box that is thier studio shatters under the weight of realization. Everyone wears a facade, some are just thicker than others.
